Tips for switching to raw dog food

VOM aims to simplify dog food by having a simple and clear product range. For a healthy dog of normal weight, it makes little difference which variant you start giving. ACTIVE Original is a great place to start for adult dogs, while growing dogs should be given PUPPY and older dogs can start with DIGESTIVE. Remember that in the case of medical conditions, any change in diet should always be cleared with a vet first.

Let's start on raw feeding with meatballs

We have a wide range of different packaging options adapted to various sizes and needs. Meatballs are by far the easiest to start with; eventually, you can switch to the product that has a price and usability that suits you. The meatballs are stored in the freezer, and before serving, you take out the exact amount needed.

From a taste to complete food

For as seamless a transition to raw as possible, we recommend a gradual introduction. On the first day, a small taste is enough—so little that it does not replace any of the dog's usual food. Over the following weeks, you gradually increase the amount until the dog is only eating VOM. As a simple rule of thumb, we find that younger dogs adapt quite quickly, whereas older dogs often need more time.

Measure out dog food based on weight, size and activity

Many people ask us how much VOM their dog should be given. As we don’t know your dog or your lifestyle, it’s impossible for us to give an exact amount. If you have an adult dog, you can start with 2% of the dog’s weight and adjust as you go along if you notice that the dog is putting on or losing weight. Small dogs generally need more than 2%, whilst large and inactive dogs can usually be given less.

Changes in bowel habits

As our products have a very high digestibility and do not contain any unnecessary additives, your dog's stools will change. Some people find this concerning, as the dog can eat a lot of food but very little comes out the other end. What does come out is also drier and harder than what you are used to, and as a bonus, it is usually completely odourless. If you want to soften the stools, you can use Digestive or add a little cooked or raw vegetables.

Benefits of raw feeding

More and more dog owners are realising that raw feeding works. You cannot paint everyone with the same brush, but generally dog owners report less dog odour, smaller and almost odourless stools, better dental health, good muscle development and a dog that stays healthy for longer. Pure, nutritious and minimally processed food is an important part of a healthy diet, and this applies to dogs as well.

Good luck with switching to raw food.
