It is advisable for the introduction to be as gentle as possible to keep the stomach stable during the food change.

During a start-up phase, we recommend using one of these products:

VOM Digestive: This product contains not only animal ingredients from chicken and beef rumen, but also rice and beet fibre. The rice helps to stabilise the stomach during a food change, while the fibre contributes to a healthy and even digestion. In addition, fibre acts as a prebiotic, which provides nourishment for the good gut bacteria.

TASTE range: includes five different products made from a single source of protein. TASTE 100% Lamb, TASTE 100% Beef and TASTE 100% Beef Tripe are particularly gentle to start with, as they are made entirely without bones.

It is appropriate to start the transition process with VOM meatballs, offering the dog one meatball at a time.

Transition to raw food

Start by introducing the dog to a little bit of VOM every day

Gradually increase the amount, and replace your dog's existing food with VOM

Take your time, preferably 1–2 weeks for the entire transition period

Some dogs can quickly change food without any problems, but we still recommend being careful with a gradual transition. Changes in stool will be normal, but if the dog gets a loose stomach, you have gone too fast! Then it is important to stop and go back in the amount of VOM you have given the dog, until the stomach is stable and you can continue the habituation.

Once the dog is fully accustomed to VOM, you can vary between our different products as needed. A varied diet is beneficial for both taste and the variety of nutrients.

Feeding rate

All dogs are different, and requirements will vary depending on factors such as breed, age and especially activity level. A dog's need for activity will not be constant, and if there are periods of high activity or mental stimulation, it will probably need more food than if it just lies quietly and sleeps large parts of the day.

The recommended daily amount is approximately 2% of the dog’s body weight when fed as a complete diet. This must be adapted to the individual dog’s needs. If the dog is active, it will probably need more than 2% of its body weight per day. Therefore, use the recommended amount as a starting point and make any necessary adjustments.

Handling

VOM is a dog food made from raw animal ingredients – and it is therefore important to follow a few simple hygiene rules in order to maintain the high quality right up until serving.

Get your food home quickly into the freezer after purchase

Store the food in a freezer until defrosting

The product must be defrosted in a refrigerator and has a shelf life of 1-2 days. Bone and cartilage are, amongst other things, a natural source of calcium and phosphorus. Both adult dogs and puppies have a digestive system that is equipped to eat animal raw materials such as meat and bone. In addition, our feed is minced so that it is as easily digestible as possible. We do not recommend removing bone or cartilage before serving, as this will affect the balanced content of calcium and phosphorus in the feed.

The products must not be heat-treated before serving! Heat treatment will cause bones and cartilage to become hard and brittle, which is not good for the dog's digestion.

Serving

There will be different preferences for how each individual dog likes to have VOM served. VOM can be served defrosted, half-frozen, and frozen.

If you want to serve your dog semi-frozen or frozen VOM, it is important to bear in mind that smaller dogs are more easily chilled by cold food than larger ones. It is therefore necessary to consider the quantity. If you have a very greedy dog, it is also important to remember that they can get frozen chunks stuck in their throat, and that it is important to supervise the dog while it eats. Frozen food is a great way to let the dog use its teeth. Chewing releases endorphins and provides mental stimulation. We nevertheless recommend that the food thaws a little before serving, so that it still offers resistance to chewing, but is softer than completely frozen food. This reduces the risk of dental damage and of the dog getting frozen chunks stuck in its throat.

Feces

It is completely normal for the dog to have smaller, firmer and drier stools when fed with VOM. This is a natural process which shows that the dog is absorbing the nutrients efficiently from the food. If you wish to make the stools softer, you can add fibre, either by using VOM Digestive or by including vegetables in the meals.

Many dog owners also notice that their dog drinks less water when eating VOM. This is because the meat in the food already contains 60–70 % of fluid, which provides the dog with natural hydration.

Beginner's guide
Puppy – new dog owner

If the puppy has been given VOM Puppy at the breeder's, you can continue to feed it with this directly after collection. How much energy and nutrients the puppy needs will depend on several factors such as the puppy's age, size, individual metabolism, stress and activity levels. If the puppy is exposed to environmental enrichment, mental stimulation, or is generally more active – it will likely need more.

Puppy: 2-5 months.
Our recommended daily feeding amount for VOM Puppy is 4–5% of the puppy’s body weight when feeding a complete diet.

Puppy: 5-8 mos.
As the puppy approaches the halfway point of its growth phase, it will often be advisable to reduce the amount to approximately 3.5% of the puppy’s body weight per day.

Puppy 8-15 months.
When the puppy is nearing full growth – at around 1 year of age, depending on the breed – you can gradually reduce the amount to approximately 2% of the puppy’s body weight per day, which is also our recommended feeding amount for adult dogs.

Size and growth rate are highly individual.
